Head Jewellery

Head jewellery in India & Pakistan takes a vast array of forms including bright colours semi-precious metals. Indian head jewellery can be worn in various parts of the head. A Tikka (or maang tikka) is a coin-sized forehead ornament. A Jhumar is larger Pakistani hair jewellery which is worn on the side of the head so as to over one temple (a Jhumar can be worn with a tikka as a jhumar-earring set). A Hair Chotli is a long decorated chain which is draped over a long plaint. A Matha-Patti is a tikka worn in a middle hair parting but also incorporating draped side chains which can be worn either: along the hairline (Rajasthani style), or on the top of the head (Arabian-style). Finally, all the former jewellery items are for women but Indian men can also wear head jewellery. Turban Pins are jewelled brooches worn on turbans usually by Asian grooms but occasionally by others for festivals.
